Exclusive Short Story
The Night Traveler
His name was Michael. He once told me his last name but I don't recall it to this day. He was apart of my life longer than he was part of my death. He introduced himself to me when we were both in a small cafe in Paris. The sun had already set and I was finishing up my tea and starting to plan my commute to England. He stood over me and asked if I was Alexandria Kiloso the famous photographer. His voice alone would have pulled my attention away from my tea & planning. When he looked into my eyes I asked him how he knew it was me. He lightly laughed and said that I had a certain glow about me. He then took a seat and told me that he loved my work. He said that he had seen my picture in an article about photos I had taken that were being using in a campaign promoting the National Parks in the united States. I was proud of those images and honored that his man had recognized me for my work. He was charming and I found myself enjoying his company. He mentioned to me that he was planning a night trip to London the following week and invited me to join him. After spending a week meeting every night after sunset at different Paris cafes I felt like this could be a man I could travel with and still be able to be independent. I hadn't noticed how I had started to pull back from spending my day outside in the sun.
We had separate cars on a train and the hallway had no windows. I didn't think anything of it how he kept his windows sealed dark and told me that he slept during the day due to his work schedule. He told me that he was and editor for a magazine and was used to staying up all night approving the articles and layouts. On our second night of the trip to London, Michael and I were sitting in the train's restaurant enjoying watching the lights of towns pass by, when he asked me if I ever thought about what I would do if I couldn't take pictures with natural light. I was young and never thought about the future, only what I was doing at that point in time. He decided to tell me a story about a man who lived to see so many changes that the only thing he actually missed was the sunrise. I decided to amuse him and told him that the sunrise is beautiful but the sunset usually held more color for me. He asked me if I would like to see the world in it's true color. Not knowing what he meant I told he yes. The next morning I didn't wake up until nearly 2pm in the afternoon. Our train was supposed to arrive just after sunset, which gave me a few hours to try and catch some final images on the train. We were one a lovely old model train that had real wood and elegant feel. When I reached the open compartment with the afternoon sun leaving no shadows, I noticed how drained I quickly became. I had just woken up and had just been full of energy. At the time I did not know that was the last time I would ever wake up from sleeping, I have never slept again.
