The Night Traveler
(Part 5)
I remember when I first felt the emptiness inside me. I had just felt like all my energy had been drained from my body. I could feel the sun pulling what energy I had from my body. I started to make my way back to my compartment to go back to bed. I wasn't tired, just felt like I have no energy to walk around or even at that point stand. The bright yellow glow nearly blinded me. When the young girl looked up at me I could hear he ask me if I was okay. I took a deep breath while I closed my eyes and then I felt the energy being pulled into me. I could taste lemons and Rosemary, and thoughts the kitchen had opened their door. I then heard the little girl's gasp just before the light vanished from behind my eyelids. I looked down at her and saw an emptiness that now could be seen behind her eyes. Moments before she had been full of life and happiness. Her face had become neutral and she just looked into my eyes and walked away. I no longer was drained and felt like I could run a marathon. I decided to continue back to my train cabin. Michael was leaning against my door. The first thing he had said to me was how I no longer was a deep purple but a bright yellow. His smirk was something I wasn't used to seeing on his face.
I invited him into my cabin where I had tea delivered with some sandwiches. We sat there and ate in near silence until he finally spoke, "Welcome to the UnDead". My only reaction was to laugh. There was no way he could have been serious, but he was. He told me a story about a man who wondered the world in the shadows craving to just stand in the sun. His story was filled with sadness and loneliness. He told me about how the sun steals energy from some abandoned souls, only for those souls to steal their energy from other souls. He told me of a world filled with color that comes from the depth of a person's being, their inner emotions & personalities that are what their soul is. He shared a story of having no need to sleep, and a day filled with time to learn while watching the world change over time. I unexpectedly felt happy and joyful at that moment that I would be able to experience a world of color unlike I had never seen. I did not know at the time that the happiness I felt wasn't my own but part of the soul I had absorbed from the little girl.
Micheal did not apologize, explain how, or tell me why I became the UnDead as a Soul Demon as he. He simply said that both life and death continue on in the light and in the dark. He excused himself form my cabin claiming to give me time to think and take in all he had said. Alone in my train cabin I sat thinking about what I could plan to do in London and if Michael would take me to places I never would have thought existed. There just had to be more to what he had told me. More to see, feel and do. New to this unseen world I needed to know how to navigate through. I don't know how long I had been in my cabin before I left to find Michael. I knocked on his cabin door and received no answer. I made my way to the lounge car and noticed that the final colors of the sunset were filtering through the windows before vanishing. There in the middle of the car was Michael. He looked peaceful and asleep. I tried to wake up and failed. I quickly went for assistance but found only one lounge attendant who told me that Michael had come into the car about 1 hour ago and sat down to watching the scenery. She told me that he refused any services and told her that he just watched to watch the sunset before falling asleep. By the time we arrived in London, the paramedics and police were waiting. He was officially pronounced dead on arrival. He had brought me into a new chapter in my life and my death, then abandoned me alone to discover what hid in the shadows for myself.
